P-au-P, August 19, 2024 (AlterPresse) – Herwil Gaspard, the Prime Minister’s Ministerial Delegate for Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, and Ulrika Richardson, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti, Sweden, in a joint press release seen by the online agency AlterPresse, called for joint efforts and enhanced cooperation to comprehensively address the humanitarian challenges in Haiti.
On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day on Monday, 19 August 2024, they also stressed that with four months to the end of the year, the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan is 33% funded.
Minister Gaspard, on behalf of the Haitian Government, called for measures to be taken to enable humanitarian workers to carry out their work safely.
Ulrika Richardson paid tribute to “the generosity and courage of the thousands of Haitian families who, amid the humanitarian crisis, are at the forefront of the humanitarian response, welcoming those affected by violence and ensuring their dignity”.
Gaspard and Richardson praised the work and dedication of humanitarian workers in providing aid to thousands of people suffering from multifaceted crises.
“In Haiti, nearly 600,000 people have been displaced by violence, three times the number at the same time last year; 24% of hospitals are functioning properly and half of the Haitian population is food insecure,” we read in the joint press release.
The Haitian Government and UN humanitarian agencies confirmed that they will, together with national and international partners, renew their commitment to “support all efforts aimed at bringing relief and hope to those most in need.”
The theme of World Humanitarian Day is “Action for Humanity” and aims to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by humanitarian actors.
It also stressed that humanitarian assistance is essential to maintaining the dignity and well-being of vulnerable people affected by conflict and natural disasters. (Published on 8 April 2024 at 12:00)
