Nathaniel Dykxhoorn is heading south Stoney Trail He received the biggest shock of his life on Friday afternoon.
The Calgary man said he was driving on the highway when the hood of a pickup truck in front of him flew up and almost stabbed him.
“I dodged it as best I could but it hit the passenger side of my car and an aluminum bar and some plastic shards broke through the windshield, shattered the passenger side window, broke a mirror and broke a headlight,” he said.
“Some debris fell under the truck and hit the lower skirt. The truck sustained significant damage.”
Nathaniel Dykxhoorn’s vehicle was damaged when the tonneau cover of a pickup truck flew off and pierced his windshield.

Truck tonneau covers are supposed to be secured to the truck, and experts told Global News that it’s all about installation and maintenance to prevent accidents like this from happening.
Luckily, Dykxhoorn was not injured, he said, “It was horrible.”

“When people tell you they saw their whole life flash before their eyes, I saw my whole life flash before my eyes,” he said. “It all looked like slow motion until it hit the glass, and then everything sped up again, and I was just thankful nothing hit me.”
“If my wife or one of my co-workers had been with me, it would have been a completely different situation. I’m thankful that I was alone on that trip and no one was hurt.”
Dixhorn said he was thankful no one else was in the car when the accident happened.

Dykshorn considers himself lucky because he was able to go to work on Monday morning.
He said police were investigating the incident as a hit-and-run because the truck driver failed to stop.
“As of now, we don’t know who the offender is or who is responsible for this. If there are witnesses, hopefully we can get some information about this.”
The rear hood of the truck went straight through the windshield of Dykxhoorn’s vehicle, causing serious damage.
