Times are tough for associations that operate mainly on subsidies. This is the case with ACAPA (Caledonian Association for the Help of Older People) and its hundred members. This Saturday’s fair is essential to raise funds, as the dire financial situation does not allow any visibility for next year.
The ACAPA show takes place every year. Many Caledonians and their families respect this appointment. But how long can this event last?
This is the problem that arises today.
The association will celebrate its 50th birthday next year. It is facing unprecedented financial difficulties. Due to lack of cash flow, the government and Noumea City Hall no longer provide subsidies. Before the riots, only the South Province transferred a little more than 5 million francs, but it was not enough.
By the end of the month I will no longer have enough money to pay my staff, so I will be forced to put three fifths into partial unemployment, and we’ll see if we can make it to the end of the year.

What about 2025? “I don’t make plans at all. If we’re the same as we are now and nothing changes, I’m not going to have any employees, I’m not going to have any drivers.” the director explained, adding that ACAPA could eventually be run by volunteers.
For the 140 members who have lost 3% of their pensions, the situation is already very difficult, so every franc counts. Huguette, a volunteer at the association, financially helps her 67-year-old disabled son, who is in his 90s and is pessimistic about the future. “Life is so hard and the cost is so high” She confided.
The only thing that still makes the heart beat fast is the home-cooked meals prepared by the residents. A garage sale is planned for September 7, which will make it possible to organize a real Christmas party.
