Police have identified the bus driver killed in the crash on Font Hill Main Road in St. Elizabeth Thursday morning as Junior Ramsay, 50, of Williamsburg, Westmoreland.
According to reports, the Toyota Hiace bus driven by Ramsay was carrying 18 passengers when the accident occurred around 3 am.
Ramsey was taken to Black River Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Fourteen passengers on the bus were injured.
Assistant Police Commissioner Gary McKenzie, who oversees public safety and traffic enforcement, said it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
“The bus had hit a tree. In fact, the bus was about 10 feet up the tree. When we examined the scene, it was clear there were swerve marks from the middle of the road to the outside of the road into the tree,” McKenzie said.
“Based on the information we have gathered so far, it appears that some level of distraction contributed to the accident. Traffic was not heavy at the time of the morning,” McKenzie added.
He urged public transport operators to be careful and cautious on the roads.
“There were 18 persons on board the bus, apart from the driver. Unfortunately, the driver has died while 14 others are being treated in hospitals and various other medical institutions,” he added.
To date, about 180 people have died in motor vehicle accidents in the parish.
