The city council of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires approved on Thursday a resolution declaring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro “persona non grata” “for serious violations of the human rights of Venezuelan citizens” in his country.
The resolution, introduced by lawmakers Claudio Romero and Emmanuel Ferrario of the conservative Republican Proposal (Pro) party, was processed “at the request of the Argentine diaspora” and was backed by a majority of the Chamber of Deputies, a body of 60 deputies, according to a statement from the body.
However, Left Front lawmakers abstained and Fatherland Alliance (Kishnerism) lawmakers voted against.
“In the city of Buenos Aires, we will not tolerate dictators, violators of human rights, those who commit atrocities in their own country in the name of a non-existent revolution, those who use torture as a means of government,” lawmaker Romero said.
Elisa Trotta, secretary general of the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD), an organization created in 2020, celebrated the decision adopted by the Buenos Aires legislature, saying it represented a strong message of support for the more than 220,000 Venezuelans “who have had to flee their country and settle in Argentina.”
Venezuelan-Argentine diplomat Trotta added: “Dictators like Maduro must know that their crimes will not go unpunished and that the world is not their backyard with blood on their hands.”
The resolution was approved 45 days before the Caribbean country’s upcoming presidential elections.
“Venezuelans took to the streets in support of the national liberation movement led by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González (anti-Chavismo opponents),” Trotta added, declaring that “the whole world is watching and will not allow the will of the citizens to be stolen.” “Let it be expressed in the vote on July 28.”
Since March 26 last year, six citizens opposed to the Venezuelan government have sought asylum in the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.
On May 30, Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino asked Venezuela to “immediately grant safe passage” to the group, in accordance with the 1954 Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum, so that they can leave the country.
