British passport holders need visa to enter Honduras: Cayman News Service

(CNS): In an apparent tit-for-tat move, the Honduran government has imposed visa entry requirements on British passport holders starting today. Last year’s The UK government requires all Hondurans to have a visa to enter the UK. The UK also has a visa requirement for Dominica, Namibia, East Timor and Vanuatu.

The move by the previous Conservative government was said to be prompted by a sharp rise in asylum claims and abuse of the rules for visiting the UK for a limited time as a non-visa national. There are signs that the new Labour government will change this policy.

Cayman Airways Limited operates two round-trip flights per week to La Ceiba. Yesterday said The Honduran Government informs that from August 15, the following nationals will require a visa to enter Honduras: nationals of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, holders of British passports stating “British nationality” from the Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (Hong Kong), and holders of British passports from other British territories, including the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Airways advises passengers travelling to La Ceiba to ensure they have all necessary travel documents, including visas, prior to arriving at the airport for check-in and document verification. Passengers must show proof of visa to Cayman Airways staff.

The Cayman Islands does not currently issue travel visas to Honduras, but they can be obtained from the consulates of Panama, Cuba, the United States and the Dominican Republic.See here Find out how to contact the consulate.)

The Honduran government’s new visa requirements for British passport holders contrast with its overall policy, which in June implemented visa-free entry for visitors from 117 countries in a bid to attract more international tourists and stimulate economic growth through tourism.

Travelers who can enter Honduras for up to 90 days without a visa include those from the Schengen area (such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands), Latin American countries (such as Mexico, Brazil and Argentina), as well as Japan, South Korea, Australia and Canada.

Under the four-nation Central American free movement agreement, travelers holding visas for El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras or Nicaragua can visit the other three countries without an additional visa.
