Joao Pedro headed home a 95th-minute winner to give Brighton a 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday, with the 31-year-old making a perfect Premier League debut for the home side.

United thought they had won the game when Bruno Fernandes scored from Alejandro Ganacho’s low pass with 18 minutes left.

However, Ghanacho’s goal was ruled out for offside following a video assisted referee check as the ball hit United substitute Joshua Zirkzee before crossing the goal line.

That gave Pedro the chance to win the game and continue Helzer’s dream start as Brighton manager, with the unmarked Brazilian striker converting Simon Atingela’s far-post cross.

Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck scored his fifth Premier League goal against his former club in the first half to put the hosts ahead, before his header hit the crossbar in the second half to leave Brighton bloodied.

United briefly controlled the game after Amad Diallo equalised in the 60th minute, but after Ganacho’s shot was ruled out, their closest efforts were long-range efforts from Scott McTominay and Casemiro, both of which missed the target.

The winner created a joyous atmosphere at the final whistle, with Hurzeler, who was appointed at the age of just 31, visibly delighted, while Billy Gilmour, who has been linked with a move to Napoli, was named man of the match to the delight of the home fans who wanted the Scot to stay.

The defeat puts United manager Erik ten Hag back in the spotlight with Liverpool set to visit Old Trafford next weekend.

In response to the game in the post-match interview, Ten Han said: “Our overload style of play was very good.

“And then it’s that final pass, putting guys in the right spots to get the right shot. We did a good job there. It’s very unfortunate.”
