Badminton World Federation (BWF) referee Brian Kliwon will referee at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. This will be his first Paralympic Games and a major milestone in his career, the proud Suriname Badminton Association (SBB) reported. Kliwon will travel to Paris on Saturday to prepare for it. Brian’s Paralympic journey began in 2016 when he was invited to the Rio 2016 Olympic Trials to showcase his skills as an international referee and experience the Olympic atmosphere for the first time. Brian began his refereeing career in 1998 by attending a course in Suriname. The following year he attended a second course in Suriname with the Jamaican Pan American Badminton Confederation (BPAC) referees. In 2000, SBB asked him to recruit and train referees and line judges for the Suriname International Championships, a role he has performed every year since then.
In 2010, Kliwon was nominated by SBB to attend the BPAC International Umpire Course in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This led to him receiving the BPAC Badminton Umpire Certification in August 2010. In July 2014, he received the BPAC Badminton Umpire Certification. In October 2016, he received the BWF recognition.
As a BPAC referee, Brian Kliwon demonstrated his skills at events in Lima (Peru), Veracruz (Mexico), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Campinas (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Guatemala City (Guatemala), Toronto (Canada) and Paris (France).
His BWF refereeing experience includes tournaments in Yogyakarta (Indonesia), Jakarta (Indonesia), Nanning (China), Port-au-Prince (Trinidad & Tobago), Cochabamba (Bolivia), Kazan (Russia), Paris (France), Saarbrücken (Germany), Santander (Spain), Jeon Woo (South Korea), Rennes (France) and Cayenne (French Guiana).
In addition to his extensive refereeing work, Brian Kliwon has also participated in Para badminton as an athlete, competing in Havana (Cuba), Lima (Peru), Medellin (Colombia) and Colorado Springs (Colorado, USA).
