EU defense ministers met today in Brussels for an informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Council. They mainly discussed support for Ukraine. Minister Ruben Brekelmans attended for the first time. Brekelmans stressed that the Netherlands will continue to support Ukraine unabated for as long as necessary.

The need for military support for Ukraine remains as great and urgent as ever. The focus is on (artillery) ammunition, air defense equipment, fighter jets and training. The minister said the new Dutch government will continue to support Ukraine militarily, politically, financially and morally. “We must not only be consistent in words but also in actions. We cannot let Russia win this war and then further threaten our European security.”
The Netherlands recently announced that it would provide Ukraine with a Patriot radar and three launchers. It also recently purchased 51 mobile radars capable of identifying drones for Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense will donate these systems to Ukraine later this year.

The EU Training Mission (EUMAM) has achieved positive results: around 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received training. This not only involves basic training, but also specialized courses such as tank and fighter training. In addition, EUMAM offers many high-quality training modules. Brekelmans: “We must strive to continuously adapt our offering to the training needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”
Additional financing
A new way to support Ukraine is to use the interest income from the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank. The member states recently agreed on this. Brekelmans: “This will provide much-needed additional funds for military assistance.”
