The Bahamas Reef Environmental Education Foundation (BREEF) is pleased to begin publishing the book Underwater in the Bahamas. This new hardcover book was published in partnership with award-winning photographer Shane Gross. With the generous support of the Sean Connery Charitable Fund, BREEF was able to donate a book to every school throughout the archipelago.

With a foreword by world-renowned ocean explorer and advocate Jean-Michel Cousteau and an introduction by BREEF Executive Director Casuarina McKinney-Lambert, “Underwater Bahamas” includes more than 200 stunning images of everything from sharks and dolphins to octopuses and seahorses, celebrating the beauty and diversity of marine life in the Bahamas.

BREEF Education Coordinator Kevin Glinton recently presented the books to the principals of Gambier Primary School, New Providence Classical School, Palmdale Primary School and Government High School. Speaking about the curriculum supplements that accompany each of the books donated to the schools, Mr Glinton said: “At BREEF we always strive to ensure that every resource we produce links back to the Bahamian National Curriculum and promotes environmental education. Therefore, we have created a curriculum reference that includes lesson plan ideas and a QR code to access additional teaching resources in our new Eco-Schools The Bahamas Oceans and Coasts Handbook and Educator’s Guide.”

Mrs. Pavia Rolle, Principal of Government High School, said: “We are very grateful and respectful of the work that BREEF does for the young people of this country.”

“Our amazing underwater world is just waiting to be explored. This book opens a window into the vibrant world beneath the sea that makes The Bahamas so special,” said Casuarina McKinney-Lambert, Executive Director of BREEF. “We are thrilled to now be able to achieve our goal of ensuring that every Bahamian student is aware of the efforts being made to protect critically important and endangered species, precious places under threat, and the livelihoods of Bahamians who depend on the pristine ocean. We also hope that this book will inspire more children to participate in some of BREEF’s ocean learning programs.”

BREEF is a non-governmental, non-profit Bahamian foundation dedicated to educating people about the value and need to protect the marine environment. BREEF is committed to protecting the Bahamian marine environment that sustains our way of life. All proceeds from sales of the book Underwater the Bahamas through the BREEF website and store go toward supporting Bahamian children in connecting with the ocean through hands-on experiences and scuba diving.
