Brasilia, August 10. – A plane carrying 61 people crashed in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo on Friday, leaving no one alive, according to local authorities, and the cause of the accident is under investigation, but no information has yet been given. No hypothesis has been proposed.
The VOEPASS Linhas Aéreas plane was flying from Cascavel airport in Paraná state to Guarulhos in São Paulo when it crashed near a residential area in the town of Vinhedo at around 1:25 p.m. local time.
The airline explained that there were 57 passengers and four crew members on board the ATR-72 propeller aircraft, although initial reports said there were 61 people on board.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed surprise at the accident shortly before giving a speech, saying: “It seems that everyone is dead.” The president expressed regret for the “sad” news and requested a minute of silence at the event, which was broadcast on his social networks, to pay tribute to the victims.
The Viñedos City Council also assured that there were no survivors, while a large device on the ground was activated to cool the area, collect possible evidence and identify the dead. A spokesman for the gendarmerie said that after a first visual inspection of the area, more than a dozen bodies were found, admitting that identifying all the victims “is not an easy task.”
Black box found
The company “did not confirm how the accident occurred” but has activated a telephone number to help the family. He did want to clarify, according to the G1 portal, that the damaged aircraft was manufactured in 2010 and had all its operating certificates.
Guilherme Derrite, the Minister of Public Security of São Paulo, confirmed the discovery of the black boxes, which were “apparently well preserved”, so their analysis will be key to understanding the cause of the accident. The Ministry of Ports and Airports explained that at the federal level, the responsibility lies with the Centre for the Study and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa).
Friday’s accident was the deadliest aircraft accident recorded in Brazil since a TAM plane overran the runway at Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport in 2007. 199 people died.
