Bolivian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship David Choquehuanca and Minister of Culture Pablo Groux today visited Isla del Sol, site of the December 21 Summer Solstice ceremony.
Choquehuanca and Groux visited Kona Bay on the aforementioned islands, where famous people from Bolivia and around the world are expected to attend on December 21.
A government gazette reported the presence of both ministers at the ceremony and announced that about 10,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony, including indigenous delegations, university students, professionals, researchers, journalists and pilgrims from Latin America and around the world. At the same time, the report also assured that more than 70% of the organizational progress of the previous session has been achieved, and that communications, transportation and food for the participants of the ceremony are also guaranteed. President Evo Morales invited the heads of state who wish to attend.
Although the summer solstice celebrations take place on December 21, many visitors spend up to three nights at this location.
The government (Ministry of Interior) has pledged to deploy more than 2,200 soldiers to protect the site, while the Civil Protection Department has prepared about 1,000 tents, in addition to guaranteeing water services.
A heliport will be installed on Isla del Sol, located in Lake Titicaca, which is considered sacred to indigenous peoples, for transportation of key national and international authorities attending the ceremony, according to a news release.
