“It’s a sign of desperation and panic. It’s panic football.” That’s how New Democracy MP Melvin Bouva responded to the Surinamese government’s decision to significantly increase rates for arranging basic documents needed for highly qualified health care providers to work abroad.
Each bill now costs $1,000 instead of SRD 250. This decision was made to prevent the departure of medical professionals.
In an interview with Culture TV, Bouar pointed out that this decision clearly shows that the government is overwhelmed. He wondered what the basis for this amount was, since health workers in Suriname do not earn dollars.
“Are you paying those nurses in dollars? When did we know a government would charge dollars for things produced here? Right now, everyone can price everything in dollars. Also out of desperation. It’s disgusting,” the NDP member said.
The lawmaker said he realizes something must be done to prevent health workers from leaving. But any increase in costs must still be kept within reasonable limits. Regardless, he expects corruption to increase because someone will inevitably pick things up cheaper.
“Maybe the government thinks they can do it, but they’re going to look ugly. First of all, all roads lead to Rome. So we don’t think it will discourage people to any great extent. And by the way, you’ll also encourage more corruption,” said Bua.
