BNPT praised for ensuring 2024 elections are terrorism-free

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto thanked the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) for successfully ensuring that the 2024 general elections will be free of terrorism.

“The BNPT, through the excellent work of its personnel, successfully ensured the safe organization of the 2024 general elections,” he said.

Speaking at the opening of the National Counter-Terrorism Museum and the establishment ceremony of the Indonesian Counter-Terrorism Association online on Tuesday (July 16), Tjahjanto attributed the success to the BNPT’s multi-sectoral approach.

He said the approach involved the government, academia, entrepreneurs, the public and the media, adding that the agency worked effectively between 2020 and 2024 to prevent terrorist attacks in Indonesia.

He further noted that 2023 is a terrorism-free year. Despite this achievement, the positive record does not mean that the threat of terrorism has been completely eliminated in Indonesia.

BNPT data and a 2023 study by the Setara Institute showed a surge in terrorist radicalization among women and young people.

“This should be our common concern and ‘homework’ to achieve the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045,” Tjahjanto stressed.

The Coordinating Minister stressed that the government will do its best to ensure that the Indonesian people are protected from terrorist attacks because a peaceful and secure environment is a necessary condition for national development.

He therefore hoped that counter-terrorism agencies would continue to work effectively and vigilantly to prevent potential terrorist attacks in Indonesia.

“We know this is not an easy task. We need courage, perseverance, prudence, and the cooperation of all parties involved,” Tjahjanto commented.
