Two parallel stories and years of shared journeys define the bond between the National Bank (BN) and the Province of Guanacaste. One celebrates 110 years of history, the other celebrates its 200th anniversary, proudly carrying the flag of one of the most beautiful regions of the country.
For more than a century, Guanacaste has been a strategic region for Costa Rica’s economic development and one of the main engines driving growth in tourism, agricultural production, real estate development, and commerce in the province.
Allies in a new livestock farming model
The climate crisis directly affects the livestock industry, as lack of rain or flooding affects milk and meat production, affecting everyone in the chain and even the environment.
Cattle consume large amounts of water, require large areas to graze, contribute to deforestation, and produce large amounts of methane gas, which is 28 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
With problems come opportunities, which is why the BN supports the project of the Association for Integrated Development of the Moracia de Nicoya Community (ADI) to implement sustainable and regenerative technologies to make livestock production in the province more sustainable.

The main focus is on the development and breeding of cattle for their subsequent commercialization in various markets. This requires the creation of jobs and production chains within the same communities, while incorporating processes with minimal ecological impact.
The initiative implements strategies such as transitioning to renewable energy, regenerating pastures through organic fertilizers, and replacing chemicals for pest control with highly effective microorganisms obtained from mountain areas.

BN plays a leading role in the project, providing non-refundable funding through the Community Transformation Programme, bringing direct and indirect benefits to more than 1,200 people in the area, including workers, intermediaries and consumers.
“The BN sustainable business model is widely used by all people, industries and organizations with whom we interact. Moracia de Nicoya’s ADI is revolutionizing the paradigm of livestock farming with processes that have minimal impact on the environment. We are proud that the model of the strategic alliance must be replicated in livestock farming across the country and around the world. Since the creation of the BN 110 years ago, we have supported all production activities and their evolution towards more responsible forms,” said Silvia Chaves, Director of Sustainability at the BN.
The BN sustainable development strategy extends to all parts of the country, even those that are not covered by other regions.
Costa Rica formally developed a low-carbon livestock strategy in 2014 and declared that the national policy supports regenerative livestock farming, which aims to restore soil fertility and restore nutrient cycles, energy and water. It also uses planned rotational grazing practices, which prevents large amounts of land from being used, helps restore wildlife habitats and prevents erosion.

Bank that supports and encourages the people of Guanacaste
In 1992, the BN became a pioneer in the financing of tourism activities in the province and the country by disbursing £459 million to 40 tourism entrepreneurs in Santa Cruz to expand and modernize hotel facilities, a sector that has become one of the main engines of the national economy.
Likewise, since 1999, the institution has supported micro and small businesses in the province through a groundbreaking banking development program, with the advice of 35 professional executives from across Guanacaste.
It is the financial entity that offers the widest network of services to the people of Guanacaste, including a network of agencies, BN services, ATMs and businesses related to electronic payment methods.
To further strengthen its comprehensive support for Guanacaste people, the Somos Guanacaste Project was born in 2023, with the aim of providing personalized support to entrepreneurs, businessmen and their collaborators, listening to their needs first-hand and offering them comprehensive solutions.
With this, BN aims to make life easier for its customers at both the personal and business levels while improving financial inclusion by bringing banks to the doorsteps of businesses, removing the barriers of distance and lack of time. Through this initiative, the institution reaches, serves and supports all parts of the country, even those that are unreachable by others.
