A column by Hafrún Kristjánsdóttir, a psychologist and head of the Department of Sports Science at Reykjavík University, has attracted a lot of attention this week, but the reason Hafrún wrote it was because of the behavior of Arnar Gunnlaugsson, the coach of Icelandic soccer champions Vikings, who was wildly kicked off the field during his team’s game this weekend.
Joval Havridazon, PhD Football, commented on Havren’s column on his show and said:
“I think what she doesn’t understand is that pole vaulting, handball and other sports are not football. Football is a lifestyle, 99% of your conversations are about football. Football is a living thing that people like this cannot understand.”

How about someone like Hafrún who has worked with at least four of the top teams in men’s football and also with many professional football players? Hafrún has also collaborated extensively with KSÍ on various issues and is in fact one of the authors of the famous KSÍ report. She has also published scientific articles on football and wrote a chapter in a book about football in the Nordic countries.
Someone like Hafrún, the vice-president of the Vals Football Association? Hafrún has served on the Val board for many years and therefore has a wealth of knowledge about the workings of Iceland’s top football team.
Someone like Hafren who has worked with Premier League teams and been invited to visit them more than once?
Is that the kind of person he means?”
asked Bjarney Lára Bjarnadóttir, manager of the Borgarfjörður Youth Association.
In a Facebook post earlier this evening, Bajani said she didn’t know of any woman or person who followed Icelandic football as closely as Hafren and that she was a true football fan.
Hafrún actually knows a lot about other sports, too. She is a national handball player herself and played with Val for a long time. She is also one of the country’s leading sports psychologists and has accompanied Icelandic athletes at major events in various disciplines, including four Olympic Games.
Then the lady holding the resume pointed out that the football coach’s recent behavior had crossed the line and that the behavior seemed to be socially acceptable in some way. Then what happened was that some person claiming to be a football doctor joined the argument and said that Hafren did not understand football and the difference between football and other sports.
This must be some kind of crash world record!”
