Bishop Christian Karasare arrives in Juba to take up his post Roman Catholic Diocese of Bentiu.

On July 3, 2024, Pope Francis established the Diocese of Bentiu in Unity State, South Sudan, and appointed Bishop Karasare. Prior to his appointment, Karasare served as Bishop of Rumbek Diocese.

Bishop Karasare said when he arrived at Juba International Airport from Rumbek on Tuesday that he was happy to serve the people of Bentiu.

“I think this is our dream and vision for South Sudan, to cross borders and not to close ourselves off without borders. We can really come together, so I come with God’s great desire, very happy. We will be leaving for Bentiu soon,” Bishop Karasare said.

He said the church would stand with the people of Bentiu to help them through the floods and economic crisis.

“It’s a challenging time. Yes, isn’t it? The floods. I’ve seen pictures of people really digging and damming up to protect their land from the floods. But that’s one of the challenges. The economy is tough. And maybe a little bit of uncertainty at times, which doesn’t really help us plan for the future. When things are going well, people go their own way. The church is very strong here with us in difficult times,” he said.

Simon Mijok Mijak, a member of the organizing committee and Minister of Roads and Bridges, said the diocese A new era for the people of Unity State.

“We are very happy to come and welcome our new bishop. This is the fruit of the Pope’s visit to South Sudan. He advised us to keep the Lord’s peace and the people of South Sudan will enjoy the life they have always had together,” Mijak said.

He added: “The new diocese is a new era for the people of West Upper Nile, the Greater Unity Church and the Bentiu Church, and next year we will celebrate the centenary of your young Church. These are the blessings of the Lord to our people of South Sudan and the people of the Greater Unity Church.”

Pope Francis created the Diocese of Bentiu from the Diocese of Malakal, making it a dependent province of the Metropolitan Diocese of Juba.

Bishop Karasare, who has served as Bishop of the Diocese of Rumbek since his ordination in March 2022, was born in October 1977 in Vicenza, Italy.

In September 2004, he was ordained as a priest of the Comboni Mission of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In 2005, he was sent on a mission to South Sudan, where he served in several positions, including director of the Komboni Missionary Initiation Course.
