The President of the Republic, Kais Saied, has just been officially announced as the preliminary candidate for re-election in the presidential elections of October 6, 2024.

As an independent candidate in the 2019 presidential election, he was elected in the second round with 72.7% of the vote, ahead of businessman Nabil Karoui. He has served as President of the Republic of Tunisia since October 23, 2019.

Kaïs Saïed was born in Tunisia on 22 February 1958. He is from Béni Khiar in the Nabeul governorate and is married to Ichraf Chebil, a local judge.

Kaïs Saïed graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of Tunisia. In 1985, he obtained a DEA degree in Public International Law. A year later, he graduated from the International Academy of Constitutional Law. In 2001, he obtained a diploma from the International Institute of Humanitarian Law of Sanremo, Italy.

Kaïs Saïed taught at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences in Sousse from 1986 to 1999. He served as Rapporteur of the Special Commission of the General Secretariat of the Arab League from 1989 to 1990. During this period, he was responsible for designing the draft amendments to the League’s Statutes and the Fundamental Regulations of the Arab Courts.

He served as Secretary General and Vice President of the Tunisian Constitutional Association from 1990 to 1995. He also served as an expert at the Arab Institute for Human Rights for two years from 1993 to 1995.

In 1997, he became a member of the Scientific Committee and the Board of Directors of the International Academy of Constitutional Law, and President of the Tunisian Centre for Democratic Constitutional Law.

He was Director of the Public Law Department at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences in Sousse from 1994 to 1999. In 1999 he taught at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences in Tunisia.
