Big smiles, colorful costumes and lots of music honoring the wealth of Afro-Costa Ricans are the protagonists of this August 31st. Festival Grand Parade: Return to our roots, Made in Limon.

Enjoy the festivities Black and Afro-Costa Rican Cultural Day, Dozens of people took seats on platforms or sidewalks arranged to keep them comfortable during the gathering, which honored the heritage and culture of people of African descent. The parade began at Assis Eisner Park.

More than 60 groups, including some representatives of educational centers such as María Inmaculada de Limón, took part in the joyful parade, where they not only marched but also danced to the tunes of the following genres: Reggae and calypso.

Women and girls combined their eye-catching long dresses with hair accessories and matching fans to beat the heat. Some also carried umbrellas which looked like part of their outfits due to their colour.

The streets were also filled with floats decorated with balloons, flowers and elements representing Afro-Caribbean culture. In a Facebook post, they explained that one of the participating allegories was that of the Municipality of Limón, which was dedicated to municipal officials and mainly to collectors who keep the “beauty and health of the state.”

The Grand Parade was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Costa Rica in March 2022.
