Before Miller’s resignation, at least eight officials from the Biden administration had resigned in protest of the Gaza war.
Andrew Miller, the U.S. State Department’s top expert on Israeli-Palestinian issues, has resigned, according to reports released on Friday.
Miller, the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for Israeli-Palestinian affairs, criticized President Biden’s so-called “bear hug” policy toward Israel during the war.
Miller, described by acquaintances as a staunch supporter of Palestinian statehood, told colleagues he decided to resign because he had seen little of his family during Israel’s eight-month war.
He noted that if it weren’t for his family, he would have preferred to stay where he was and “fight for what he believed in,” The Washington Post reported.

His resignation follows the departure of at least eight officials from the Biden administration in protest of the Gaza war and the president’s strong alliance with the Israeli government.
Miller’s resignation is particularly significant because he was the most senior official involved in Israeli-Palestinian policy making.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed Andrew’s departure in a statement to The Washington Post, saying: “Andrew brings a wealth of experience and keen insights every day.”
He added: “Everyone here is sad to see him go but we wish him all the best in his next endeavours.”
U.S. officials said Miller advocated for the United States to more effectively use its significant military, economic, political and diplomatic support for the Israeli government.

Israel, which is currently on trial in the International Court of Justice for genocide against Palestinians, has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip since October 7.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 37,431 Palestinians have Killed85,653 people have been injured in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza since October 7.
In addition, at least 7,000 people remain missing in the Gaza Strip, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes.
Palestinian and international organizations said most of the dead and injured were women and children.
The Israeli war led to severe famine, mainly in northern Gaza, and killed many Palestinians, most of them children.
The Israeli aggression has also resulted in the displacement of nearly 2 million people across the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely populated southern city of Rafah near the Egyptian border – the largest Palestinian exodus since the 1948 Nakba.
Israel said that 1,200 soldiers and civilians died in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7. Israeli media reported that many Israelis were killed by “friendly fire” that day.
