U.S. President Joe Biden spoke by phone with the leaders of Qatar and Egypt on Friday afternoon to push for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israelis held by Hamas.
According to the release, President Biden spoke separately by phone with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to discuss “diplomatic efforts to hopefully complete a ceasefire” and release talks with the hostages.
Biden’s engagement with the leaders of Egypt and Qatar coincided with the resumption of talks in Cairo on Friday to promote a ceasefire in Gaza.
President Biden’s national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters that the talks continued yesterday, with the United States represented by CIA Director Bill Burns and US Middle East envoy Brett McGurk.
Representatives from the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Israel attended the talks, but again no Hamas representatives.
