President Joe Biden has ordered the Secret Service to provide protection for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy following a failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the head of the Department of Homeland Security said Monday.

“In light of the events of this weekend, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection for Robert Kennedy Jr.,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters.

Kennedy, a scion of the nation’s most famous political family, an environmental lawyer and longtime vaccine skeptic, has no chance of winning the November election, but his candidacy could swing tight races in key swing states.

Trump earlier in the day called for Secret Service protection to be extended to Kennedy.

“Given what is happening in the world today, I believe that Robert F. Kennedy II must immediately accept Secret Service protection. Given the history of the Kennedy family, this is obviously the right thing to do!” Trump posted on social media.

The 78-year-old former president was injured but narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a brazen attack that shocked a nation already deeply polarized ahead of the November election.
