BIC concludes third calligraphy project in Uganda – BigEye.UG

BIC, a global leader in stationery, lighters and razors, recently completed the third cohort of the renamed Writing Course, benefiting 8,953 students. “My words, my stories, my BIC pen”, The program has been renamed “Express Myself with My BIC Pen” to incorporate creativity and expression through writing and drawing.

Commenting on the success of the programme, Salome Ngugi, BIC Marketing Manager for East Africa, said: “BIC is committed to enriching students’ educational journeys. Our programme goes beyond providing writing tools to focus on overcoming challenges such as handwriting, which is essential to a child’s development. In 2024 alone, over 8,953 students will benefit as we aim to create an environment that nurtures students and helps them reach their full potential.”

Throughout the program, students write and draw with BIC ballpoint pens to express their creativity, making the transition from pencil to pen smoother. Students who excel will receive a BIC pen license and receive BIC-branded educational materials.

Senior Education Officer at the Ministry of Education and Sports, Musoke Abbey, thanked BIC for its efforts to improve writing skills in schools as it is in line with the ministry’s goal to promote reading and writing.

Mr. Mujasi Gerald, the Principal of Nakasero Primary School, stressed the importance of handwriting in education, saying, “The ‘Express Myself with My BIC Pen’ programme has benefited our students tremendously. It has increased their confidence in their handwriting ability, helping them to retain information and develop cognitive skills.”

One of the students who participated in the project, Twimukye Joanna, shared her excitement about receiving her BIC Pen License: “Completing the ‘Express Myself with My BIC Pen’ project has increased my confidence in writing. It has greatly improved the way I present my work, and I am proud to show my progress to my teachers and classmates.”

One parent of a student who participated in the program expressed his pride, saying, “It has been so rewarding to watch my child gain confidence through this program. His newly acquired writing and drawing skills are a testament to the positive impact of the program.”

Over the past three years, the program has distributed BIC pens to 79 schools, impacting 25,441 students. BIC’s “Express Yourself with My BIC Pen” program stems from the company’s commitment to improve learning conditions for 250 million students by 2025 – as part of its sustainability plan Let’s write the future together.
