Bhutan receives first tranche of 2.5 billion Ngultrum from ESP

On May 22, Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Sudhakar Dalela handed over a cheque of Ngultrum 2.5 billion to Finance Minister Lekey Dorji as the first instalment of the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP).

Prime Minister Tshering Togay formally launched the Nu 15 billion ESP in Thimphu on May 18. The Indian government will support the ESP.

A dedicated ESP secretariat under the Cabinet will oversee the implementation of the scheme.

Finance Minister Reki Dorje expressed gratitude to the Government and people of India for their continuous support for the socio-economic development of Bhutan.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Finance, the ESP is intended to address the economic challenges facing the country in the wake of the pandemic.

The ESP is expected to revitalize key economic sectors, create jobs and improve overall economic health, including liquidity and international reserves.
