On February 17, the international peace organization “Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light” held an online event with about 160 journalists from 49 countries. This year, the HWPL International Peace Journalism Seminar ushered in the publication of its second journal, “Peace Journalism Studies”, which was completed by 9 journalists from around the world.
The theme of the event was “Conflict Resolution from a Media Perspective”, which aimed to share the concept of peace journalism, voice the collective voice of the International Peace Media Network, and propose future action plans to call for peace in the hearts of people around the world. Among the participants, 6 speakers spoke on the role of media in peacebuilding, peace-related issues, peace journalism and global security.
Innocent Yuh, Southwest Regional Coordinator of the Cameroon Association of Media Professionals (CAMP), noted the need to discuss peace journalism. “When navigating the delicate nexus of conflict and discord, peace journalism becomes a beacon, a tool of empathy and a catalyst for meaningful change. Peace journalism becomes a channel for open dialogue, provides a platform for different perspectives and fosters a deeper engagement with the multifaceted nature of conflict resolution,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of ethics in peace journalism, Hendri Noorsar, editor-in-chief of Jambidaily.com, said: “Journalists must be available to attend events. We cannot deny that the media must strive to remain a source of correct information and present it professionally according to rules such as the code of ethics. This ensures that journalists are responsible in their profession, especially when searching for and presenting information.”
Ukrainian journalist and lawyer Ihor Sheverov appealed to the participants for the role of peace journalism in laying the foundation for conflict resolution. “The war in Ukraine poses a threat to global security as a whole. It should also be emphasized that not only states are influential ‘actors’ in strengthening global security. It is also in the interest of civil society and civil society institutions. Peace journalism helps to establish communication between the parties to the conflict,” he said.
Lok Bahadur Chaudhary, Founder, Publisher and Editor of Hamarpahura.com, advised journalists to adopt a practical approach to peace building, saying, “We must not only create awareness but also inspire people to actively participate in the pursuit of peace and accelerate the realization of a peaceful world. Regular coverage of global peace events should be a monthly task in every country.”
On the positive role that individuals can play in building peace through the use of social media, Oral Ofori, Founder of TheAfricanDream Company, said: “Social media allows people from different cultures and backgrounds to communicate directly. Interactions on these digital platforms, if harnessed in a positive way, can foster a global community working together for peace and mutual understanding. Grassroots reporting draws attention to conflicts that might otherwise go unnoticed or unreported.”
“By 2022, 60% of the public believe that the news they receive contains bias or even false information. Peace journalism in meaning and principle is a journalistic practice that aims to minimize conflict, promote dialogue and help build peace in society. HWPL is the only international non-governmental organization that calls on all media to promote peace,” said Rana Setiawan, chief journalist of Mira Islamic News Agency (MINA).
As HWPL continues to advocate for peace journalism, the event also serves as a rallying cry for media efforts, urging all media outlets to play their part in bringing the world together in pursuit of lasting peace.
