The National Party has called for an urgent meeting with members of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) to discuss the ongoing power outage crisis affecting the people of Malta and Gozo.
Grech insisted in a statement that Energy Minister Miriam Daly must be held accountable for “unfulfilled promises” and resign immediately.
“It’s all been laid bare – the government has not invested properly and we are facing an ongoing crisis due to the lack of planning and investment in infrastructure over the past 10 years under the Labour government.”
The National Party leader pointed out that despite Daly’s claim that “2023 was a record year for energy infrastructure investment”, the Auditor-General found that the government invested less in 2023 than in 2014, and considered this “another reason why Miriam Daly should resign immediately”.
Grech said the blackouts had a severe impact on daily life, noting that many people faced “long periods without light”, which also affected businesses. “Many people have to endure the constant noise and air pollution from generators outside their homes.” He called on the government to compensate those affected by the power outages.
Grech also criticised Prime Minister Robert Abela for his “lack of trust in his Labour cabinet colleagues” because he “abandoned the country at the height of its national crisis” instead of appointing an acting prime minister, which is normally possible under the constitution.
The nationalist leader said the country needed a government that invested in providing a better life for all. “I don’t want anyone to go through in recent days and weeks the national crisis they went through last summer and the power outages that affected us,” Grech said.
