along with New Jersey Devils Receive the 10th overall pick in the first round in 2024 NHL Draft – at least as of last weekend – we thought it would be a good idea to take a guess at who the Devils will select on Friday, June 28th here at The Sphere. With no mock drafts available across the web for obvious reasons, James put together who he thinks will go first through ninth. I then asked the staffers on the floor who they would take at No. 10 based on James’ first nine selections. Will that happen on Friday? Maybe, maybe not. That should give you an idea of what we think after more than a month of candidate profiles and free-agent related posts.
James’ mock draft picks #1 through #9

10th place in the collective draft
The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft in All About the Jersey mock draft is a center/left wing from the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs, according to a 5-of-6 vote. Berkeley Caton.
Jackson Profile Caton said earlier this month that it was a good starting point to learn more about the player.
Reasons for all contributors
When the board made its mock draft selections, the following rationales were given.
Jared: I do share the Devils’ concerns about taking another small-skill forward in the draft that another team has selected. But I think the No. 10 pick is a rare opportunity to add a much-needed center to the team, and Carton has an “all-out” offensive upside that the Devils should work to capitalize on. They can take their time to develop Carton and make him stronger over the next few years before recruiting him to the NHL level, while Fitzgerald should look to other players on NHL rosters for players with grit, size, and tenacity.
John: Although I support the Devils’ draft Michael Brandseger-Nygardif the Devils can take Berkley Cotton at 10th, I’ll be hooked. Offensive skills are important, and Cotton excels in attacking, transition play, dribbling with and without the ball, and scoring. Critics will complain that he’s not big enough or athletic enough. In the near future, it’s more important to fill the scoring sheet and add another dangerous forward for opponents to worry about. If Berkley Cotton can be taken at 10th, I’ll be on the podium for him.
Jackson: There are concerns about his size and defensive abilities, but if Carton is selected at No. 10, then it’s a definite win for me. His playing style is reminiscent of Jack Hughes — Carton himself said he models himself after Hughes in many ways — and if Carton can be even 75% of Hughes, the Devils will have another star forward on their hands. Carton is a gifted skater with great puck skills, a high hockey IQ, and amazing offensive instincts. His transition game is a big plus, and given New Jersey’s penchant for attacking in transition, Carton could fit perfectly into the Devils’ style of play. Whether he stays at center and becomes an overqualified third-line center or moves to the wing and slots in the top six with Hughes or Nico Hischier, Carton will be another dangerous forward that teams will have to consider when facing the Devils. If the draft plays out this way, I’ll be rushing to the podium to select Carton.
Chris: At this point, the first line may be pretty much set (Jesper Bratt-Nico Hischier-Timo Meier), and while Jack Hughes’ linemate is still a question mark, Catton could also be a very high-end third-line center. I don’t think he should drop to 10, but if he does, then the Devils need to pick him. Having Lenni Hämeenaho, Arseni Gritsyuk, and Catton on the team at the same time also saves them from having to sign any other long-term contracts to forwards other than Dawson Mercer over the next few offseasons.
Taylor: My first pick was Sam Dickinson of the London Knights, but since he was eliminated in this mock draft, I’m going to go with Zeev Buyum As an excellent consolation prize. He may not be as good in his zone as Dickinson, but he is also very good on offense. And since this is a defensive draft, having Buim drop to 10th is an absolute windfall. I’ve seen some mock drafts that have him as high as 3rd. He is solid in all zones, can attack, and skates well in transition. Also, the reason I want Dickinson here is that I can imagine a defense core of Simon Nemec, Luke Hughes, and Buim for the next decade. Yes, Carton, MBN, and Beckett Sennek Both Very The 10 spot is tempting; especially with Sennecke for me – he’d probably be my pick going forward. But I’m a firm believer that playoff wins are often because of a really good defensive unit. You have three defenders who can fundamentally change a team, make the transition game unstoppable, and allow a dynasty to begin. Plus, frankly, I live in California and loved Buium starting his career here with the Jr. Kings. So maybe I’m a little biased. Plus, he’s really strong, Good at pull-ups.
Final thoughts and your take
James’ board really determines who we pick. Tomorrow, I will summarize the many mock drafts I have seen online, from experts to non-experts. As a hint, I can tell you that Iginla has a good chance of leading Calgary, and Seattle is also likely to no Selecting a defenseman, Carton is a very realistic option at 10th or later. The 2024 NHL Draft after the second pick can go in many directions, and even the second pick is not completely fixed. In addition to Carton, there are viable options at 10th. Taylor’s selection of Buim (and Dickinson, although he selected him earlier in this exercise) is Very is defensible, and we mention some other prospects in our rationale.
