Six Dutch nationals accused of trying to kidnap Belgium’s former justice minister will no longer face kidnapping charges but will instead stand trial for illegal weapons and forming a criminal organization. Local media report.
Four out of six Arrested In September 2022 in The Hague and Leidschendam, they allegedly conspired to kidnap Vincent Van Quickenborne at his home on the orders of a Dutch drug gang.
according to Belgian mediaThe arrests were made after a car with Dutch license plates was found near the minister’s home in Kortrijk containing Kalashnikov rifles, other weapons and bandages that can be used to bind a person’s hands and feet.
Two other Dutch nationals were subsequently arrested and all six were extradited back to Belgium.
According to police, the gang planned to kidnap Van Quickenborn and exchange him for an inmate in a Belgian prison.
However, prosecutors now say they cannot prove the six suspects knowingly took part in the kidnapping plot and have dropped that part of the charges against them.
