largeTrinity College Preparatory School in Leuven, Flanders, will include the study of Arabic in its school curriculum this year, according to several Mediahuis outlets.
This decision is largely related to the modernization of secondary education, which allows schools to offer modern language instruction on the basis of a limited number of hours of Latin, economics, science or mathematics. Certain hours can be filled by courses of the school’s own choice.
“We don’t want to coddle our students, but to challenge their intelligence with a language that is not part of the Indo-European family,” explains Frank Baeyens, the school’s principal. “We want to show them that a language can be constructed in a completely different way, with different writing and symbols. Our goal is not to make them fluent in Arabic either. It is a philosophical and cultural language. Their horizons are broadened. »
Mr Baines also stressed the social importance of the project. “A group of students speak Arabic as their mother tongue. The presence of a teacher of Arab origin who can be a role model for these students will bring great added value. Thus, students can draw inspiration from people who have a certain social status, continue their studies and are satisfied with it. Today, there are too few teachers with an immigrant background. »
