Belgian athlete Bashir Abdi won the silver medal in the Olympic marathon in the French capital Paris on Saturday morning.
Abdi finished in a season-best time of 2:06:47, 21 seconds behind Ethiopian champion Tamirat Tola, who set an Olympic marathon record of 2:06:26. Kenya’s Benson Kipruto took bronze in 2:07:00.
In the difficult race starting from the Paris City Hall, ending at the Invalides Square and passing the Palace of Versailles (the entire race is 436 meters above sea level and the gradient is no less than 13.5%), Tora’s performance was definitely better than others.
On the steepest section about 10km from the finish, he began to accelerate at a breakneck pace, unmatched by anyone. The gold medal was gone, but among the pursuers it soon became clear that Abdi, Kipruto and Dereza Greta would battle it out for silver and bronze.
Second Olympic Medal
Greta was unable to catch up with the others, and Abdi, 35, won his second Olympic medal of honor, having already won bronze at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
Two other Belgians arrived at the finish line a little later: Michael Somers in 2:10:32 in 22nd place, and Koen Naert in 61st place in 2:16:33.
On Sunday there will be the women’s marathon: Chloé Herbiet and Hanne Verbruggen will start at 08:00 and run the same course.
