Last July, the general cargo terminal at the Port of Beira, in Sofala province, reached a historic milestone with a record monthly handling volume of 442,000 tonnes, while in July 2023 the volume was 199,000 tonnes, an increase of 122%.
Contributing to this growth were increases in domestic cargo clinker and corn imports, as well as significant increases in wheat, equipment and sulphur imports by countries in the region.
Miguel de Jenga, operations director of Cornelder de Moçambique, the concessionaire for the port of Beira, said that in terms of exports there is geographical diversification, with sources from three countries, including exports of local eucalyptus and manganese from Zambia.
Zimbabwe maintains its leading position in the export market through the Port of Beira. He said that globally, general cargo terminals in the first seven months of this year increased by 24% compared to the same period in 2023.
“In turn, the container terminal recorded a strong growth of 40% in the first seven months of the year, handling 226,000 containers, compared to 160,000 containers in the same period of 2023,” he said, adding that Zimbabwe continued to promote exports through the port of Beira, mainly chrome, lithium, petalite and tobacco.
In turn, Malawi’s cotton and tea exports have increased significantly, and tobacco exports are expected to increase in the coming months, further solidifying the port’s position as a regional export hub.
