Bears and Eels get off to a good start

The Cook Islands Rugby Union Premier League has kicked off with the Arorangi Bears, Titikaweka Bulldogs, Awatiu Eels and Tupapa Panthers all having a strong campaign with several players performing well.

The Bears started the season strong, defeating the determined Bulldogs 45-17.

The Bears’ win was led by the impressive Heather brothers – Rob, Taua and Heath – who combined for five touchdowns.

Robert and Taoa each contributed two touchdowns, and Heath added another, highlighting their dominance on the field. Hooker Rob Heather and prop Daniel Tonorio were key to the Bears’ success, showing their strength in scrimmage and on sideline kicks.

Despite their competitive spirit, the Bulldogs struggled from set pieces and paid a heavy price. The other match took place at Victoria Park in Tupapa on Saturday afternoon, with a spirited battle between 2023 grand finalists Tupapa Panthers and the Awati Unikau Eels.

The Eels narrowly defeated the Panthers 16-13.
