Since the first working generation in Europe in the 1970s, the Central Bank of Morocco has supported Moroccans around the world through banking services, meeting their evolving needs and being keen to maintain the diaspora’s ties to the country. Therefore, since the early 1980s, BCP has also capitalized on the education and culture of these generations, in addition to the financial sector.

To this end, the Banque Popular des Beaux-Arts founded the Education and Culture Foundation in 1984, with the initial goal of building schools for Moroccan children around the world. That same year, a pilot institution was opened in Dcheira, near Agadir, followed by a second one in Tangier in 1997. During its first decade, the Foundation also expanded the scope of its activities.

Since 1992, the institution has also focused on promoting or organizing cultural, artistic and educational activities. It supports artists and other Moroccan NGOs in their interventions through sponsorship or patronage. The institution is now “the oldest foundation of the Moroccan Bank dedicated to the exercise of citizenship” and one of the first NGOs to be recognized as a public utility in 1996.

In a logic closely aligned with the company’s image, it succeeds in meeting the specific expectations of MDM’s clients, who wish “to ensure that their children receive an education based on identity, values ​​and Moroccan reality. The first two schools quickly became “models of success and excellence in their respective regions”.

The MDM school is open to children of Moroccans abroad as well as children of BCP clients, which makes it possible to create a framework of diversity among young nationals here and elsewhere.

Providing a framework for quality education for children in Morocco

For young MDMs, these institutions emphasize primary and secondary education, allowing the youngest to acquire knowledge of the culture and language of their country. In Dcheira in particular, the pilot school can accommodate up to 900 children. It covers an area of ​​35,000 square meters and features single-storey buildings surrounded by vegetation.

When it opened in 1984, the school building included “a teaching building with 27 classes, a canteen for 400 students, a dormitory for 120 students, a library, two practical studios, a vegetable garden, a greenhouse growing space and a huge multi-disciplinary sports field.

Of the 27 primary courses, 3 are introductory courses, 6 are from CE 1, 4 are from CE 2, 4 are from CE 3, 3 are from CE 4, 3 are from CE 5, 2 are from CE 6, 1 is from CE 7 and 1 is from CE 8. The educational framework is in line with the plans of the Moroccan Regulatory Ministry, with a 100% success rate in university and high school entrance exams, aiming to achieve excellence under the supervision of teachers seconded from national education and trained in education.

The educational institutions are actually composed of teachers of Arabic, French, mathematics, civic education, Islamic education, history and geography, life and earth sciences, physics and chemistry, technology, physical education, plastic arts, English and computer science, among other professional educators.

In addition to providing crash courses for non-Arabic-speaking children, these schools also focus education on extracurricular activities such as “practical work (sewing, embroidery, carpentry, etc.), manual labor (gardening, etc.), computers, languages, academic support, libraries, educational games, early learning activities (drama, music, painting, etc.) and outings (visits, discoveries, trips to multiple regions, etc.). ” Small parties are also held on birthdays in order to “strengthen the connection between children.”

After building a second school in Tangier in 1997, the BCP Foundation expanded its educational activities to achieve closer connections. From the 2000s, it strengthened its mission to contribute to the “development of the national education system” by working with local children in remote areas.

Through a series of initiatives in this direction over more than a decade, the idea of ​​the BCP Foundation is to improve the schooling conditions for these children, while combating dropouts and providing spaces for excellence, in partnership with other NGOs, institutions and territorial partners.
