The man who died in a tragic accident while carrying out work in a lift shaft earlier today has been identified as engineer Robert Schembri, who sat on the board of the Building Authority.

The BCA expressed sadness at the news of its board member’s death in a post on Facebook, with former Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Bogue paying tribute to Schembri as “the engine behind several important projects such as WSC, Enemalta and Infrastructure Malta”.

The 64-year-old man from St. Lucija, later identified as Schembri, died after falling four floors down a lift shaft at an apartment building in Triq Stella Maris in Sliema, according to a police statement released on Saturday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around noon after police received reports of the accident, but the medical team was unable to save the man’s life.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud has launched a judicial inquiry into the incident. Police and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority are also investigating.
