Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has pledged approximately 300 million Jamaican dollars, which will provide a significant boost to tourism in communities across the island.
The money will be distributed to sixty-three (63) communities across the country to host small events to attract more tourists and increase potential revenue for small tourism suppliers.
“Creating more tourism products under our network of connections is part of our overall growth strategy to attract more tourists by adding value and enhancing the tourist experience. In the competitive tourism industry, adding value has become the benchmark and when you are able to offer more, you will provide a better value proposition to tourists than your competitors.
These community tourism projects will provide our visitors with authentic Jamaican experiences, both in terms of food and entertainment, and increase revenue for our vendors,” Minister Bartlett said.
The announcement was made today at the official launch of M-Academy at the China Philanthropy Centre in Kingston. M-Academy is a partnership between the Jamaica Social Investment Fund and Major Events to provide alternative livelihoods and skills development. The main objective of the programme is to provide in-demand skills in event production to 100 students across 7 parishes in Jamaica.
Endorsing the move, Minister Bartlett added: “I am delighted that this initiative will help to enhance the capabilities of our young people so that they can earn money and meet the demands of the entertainment industry which is inextricably linked to tourism.
This means we will be able to rely more on local talent to seamlessly execute large events that attract tens of thousands of people, such as festivals and conferences.”
The M-Academy training program will begin by certifying 100 youth at risk in all aspects of world-class event management and production skills from a leading Caribbean entertainment company.
