The international conference was held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre as part of FEGAMY’s annual summer youth camp, which aims to equip Gambian youths with necessary life skills, leadership qualities and a solid foundation in Islamic values.

Organisers said the support played a huge role in ensuring the event was a success, with more than 200 young people taking part.

The theme of the 12th edition of the event is: “Combating Gambling and Drug Abuse in Senegambia.”

The president of the Senegalese Movement for Justice, Pape Abasse Drame, stressed the importance of this integration, saying: “Many young people are drawn to drug problems because of the influence of their peers or because of materialism. Therefore, as young people in the region, we should stand up and put an end to this scourge.”

Ebrima Bah, Director of FEGAMY Youth Camp, urged the youths of the region to seize the opportunities offered by the region and stop all activities that are detrimental to their well-being. “This integration should not be limited to Gambia and Senegal but should be in all of Africa.”

Bach thanked President Barrow for his personal involvement in ensuring the success of the event. He said: “I would like to sincerely thank the President for his support. I can say with certainty that without his support, we would not be here today.”

Elaborating on the importance of raising awareness and sensitivity in combating drug use and abuse among young people and other related issues, FEGAMY Chairman Ibrahima Ceesay said: “We offer a combination of daytime and evening courses that promote personal development and friendship. Our teaching is delivered by carefully selected lecturers and covers a variety of topics that are in line with Islamic teachings.”

“The camp is centered around learning and emulating the life of the Prophet Muhammad as described in the Quran and Hadith.”
