President Adama Barrow spoke on Saturday after a day-long inspection of OIC road projects in Greater Banjul and West Coast regions.
The Gambian leaders first inspected the Banlong road project, and then went to Sukuta, Brusubi, Vulinkama, Brufut and Bakot road projects.
The visit was aimed at enabling Gambian leaders to get first-hand information, personally understand the progress of the ongoing projects and engage with the people (beneficiaries) on how to address the challenges of road construction.
“I am very happy with the progress of the road projects. One of the reasons for undertaking such visits is not only to assess and get first-hand information but also to interact with the beneficiaries. The ongoing road projects are very dear to me,” President Barrow said in an interview with journalists.
He said that, in his view, there is no development without infrastructure, adding: “I think these grass-roots visits are very important as it enables me to interact with the people (beneficiaries of the road) to address some of their challenges.”
The Gambian leader also expressed the hope that the ongoing OIC road project will be fully completed and operational by October.
“I am very hopeful that the ongoing road projects such as roads, street lights and drainage systems will be 100% completed and put into operation by October. These roads are very important because they are not ordinary roads and this will be the first time that Gambia will enjoy such roads.”
He went on to thank the contractors, the National Roads Authority (NRA) and the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure for their hard work and commitment to the road projects.
He assured the Gambian people that under his government, everything is possible.
For his part, the Minister of Information, Dr Ismaila Sesa, noted that the President was very concerned about the progress of the ongoing road projects, adding that it was part of the President’s transformative agenda to transform the country’s infrastructure.
“The president is visiting road projects to get first-hand information, understand what is happening and engage with the people.
He said this would not be the last time the President would inspect road sites, adding that sooner or later the projects would be completed and inaugurated by the President.
The President was accompanied on the visit by senior government officials, including the Chief of Staff, Cabinet Secretary and ministers.
