Barack Obama has endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for the US presidency. This means the vice president has the support of all leading figures in the Democratic Party.
“We’re calling to tell you that Michelle and I are so proud to support you and to do everything we can to help you get through this election and into the Oval Office,” former U.S. President Barack Obama told Harris in a phone call that was videoed on social media.
“I have to tell my daughter, Kamala, as we’re having this phone conversation, I’m so proud of you,” former first lady Michelle Obama said. “This is going to be historic.”
The Obamas have yet to announce their support for Harris following President Joe Biden’s decision on Sunday to drop out of the race.
“We told her that we think she’s going to be a fantastic president of the United States and that we have our full support for her,” Barack Obama tweeted on Friday about a phone call with Harris earlier this week.
“At this critical moment for our country, we will do everything we can to ensure she wins in November.”
Barack Obama made history in 2008 as the first African-American president, and Harris hopes to make history of her own as the first woman and woman of color elected to lead the country.
Even though Obama was elected more than a decade ago, he remains one of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party, and he has endorsed Vice President Biden at major fundraisers.
Harris thanked the Obamas for their support and long-standing friendship. She has known Obama since before his election in 2008.
“Thank you both. It means a lot. We’re going to have some fun with it, too, right?” Harris said.
Harris’s run against Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump continues to gain support from supporters, donors and politicians less than a week after Biden dropped out of the race.
