The Civil Society Working Group (GTSC) has drawn up a table of the evolution of prices of goods and services between 2020 and 2024. The table, dedicated to the evolution of prices in Bangui, shows that the prices of several products such as food and basic necessities have almost doubled.
The GTSC is clearly concerned about the socio-economic conditions experienced by the people of Central Africa and therefore wishes to be realistic. The table shows the evolution of the prices of basic necessities and hydrocarbons over four years.
“You have to have the courage to admit that living in the Central African Republic is a miracle. In 2020, a liter of oil cost 665 CFA francs. Today it is 850. Diesel was 850 francs and now costs 1,350 francs. An increase of 58%. In 2020 it was 2,000 francs, today a bowl of cassava costs 3,000 or even 4,000 francs.” said Paul Crescent Beninga, spokesman for the GTSC.
In addition to the consequences, the GTSC also explored the causes while calling on national authorities to take responsibility.
‘A trade-killing policy’
“This situation is easy to understand because we have no roads. In addition, the tax and customs policy is a trade-killing policy. Upstream, the government must do something. He must consider all these aspects. But the fact is that the government has given up on this point.” Paul Crescent Beninga said.
The GTSC is alarmed by the same situation of the population in the interior of the country and has promised to publish another report. According to this review, illegal barriers are considered one of the main reasons for the surge in market prices. However, several months after the removal of certain illegal roadblocks on the road to Bangui, the situation has not changed.
