The Betar News leadership team in Bangladesh highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing the local industry during a recent visit by ABU News Director Deborah Steele.
A comprehensive briefing was conducted by Deputy Director of Information ASM Zahid and Director of Information Tania Naznin. Additional insights were shared by Director of Communications and Audience Research Md. Abdul Hoque, Deputy Director of Information Kanika Bhowmik, Regional Director of Information Md. Quamrul Islam and other colleagues from the Information Department.
Following a briefing at Betar’s headquarters in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where the meeting discussed media convergence, audience engagement, emergency reporting and the challenges of engaging young audiences, Deborah was given a tour of the newsroom and studio.
Radio Bangladesh is the country’s national radio network with stations and studios across Bangladesh.
Malaysian media personality and former Astro Awani editor-in-chief Kamarul Bahrin Bin Haron provided additional industry knowledge and advice.
The workshop was attended by journalists, producers, videographers and graphic designers. Topics discussed included BTV World’s value proposition for international audiences, the importance of context and relationships in maximizing audience engagement, ways to ensure the format is sustainable and allow the team to focus on priority content, and the importance of mitigating the risk of disinformation. The workshop focused on the practical application of key principles, and participants produced four videos on aspects of life in Dhaka that sparked interest among international audiences.
