Bangladesh Army Chief M K P Khairulzzaman said on Monday that talks were being held to form an interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled into exile.

Army chief confirms Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and appeals to citizens "Stop the violence and trust the military"he added, according to Reuters. "We will meet with the president to discuss forming a transitional government",show "No need for curfew or emergency measures".

Bangladesh’s prime minister left for India in a military helicopter after resigning from his post on Monday, Reuters reported, as thousands of protesters attacked the prime minister’s residence after hundreds were killed and wounded by police bullets on Sunday.

Clashes during anti-government demonstrations in Bangladesh have left at least 300 people dead, with 94 killed on Sunday, the highest single-day death toll in weeks of protests, according to an AFP tally.
