Libreville, Sunday, August 25, 2024 (Gabon News) – In recent days, a group of bandits armed with machetes, sticks, axes and other weapons of Libreville have taken over the streets of the economic capital, sowing the seeds of terror in the process.
It felt like the Tutsis being massacred with machetes during the Rwandan genocide in 1994, but it wasn’t. Images circulated showing violence by criminal gangs in Port-Gentil reached its finale last Friday.
In fact, organized young criminals carried out robberies in the streets, houses, bars, shops and businesses, during which people’s property was robbed and even thugs looted everything they passed by. What exactly caused this operation to become a clean-up operation?
Witnesses explained that it all started with a fight between two rival gangs of young people from different communities, followed by a violent response and then turned into a manhunt.
Everyone condemned the reprehensible act, especially local authorities, who in a statement called for calm before any arrests were made.
The transitional president, who was on vacation in Haut-Ogoué province, also came out to condemn these brutal acts of disrespect for the country, and then issued firm instructions to the security forces to restore order.
“I condemn in the strongest terms the violence that has taken place in Port-Gentil. These acts will not go unpunished. I order the defence and security forces to take all measures to restore order and guarantee the safety of everyone. The use of force will remain within the limits of the law,” General Brice Clotaire Origi Nguema responded on social networks.
Furthermore, the head of state invited the population to cooperate with the judicial system, denounce the bandits in hiding and protect them from harm. The latest news is that the military has taken control of the city and all the borders of Port-Gentil are blocked.
