Bahr el Ghazal University in Western Bahr el Ghazal State on Tuesday launched a consultant training programme where consultants will mentor postgraduate students and teach them thesis writing techniques.
The training aimed to equip academic staff with advanced skills in guiding students and the theme was “Strengthening the Capacity of Academic Staff”.
Dr. Rabei Yusuf Mubarak, Acting Dean of the Graduate School, stressed that the main goal of the workshop is to provide academic staff with the basic knowledge and skills for effective mentoring and thesis writing. He stressed that the training is aimed at addressing common issues that mentors face when interacting with graduate students.
“The overall goal of the workshop was to enhance academic staff’s ability to effectively mentor students and address the common challenges of mentoring graduate research,” he said. “Our specific goals were to highlight the issues mentors commonly face when communicating with graduate students and to identify and address gaps in university mentoring to improve academic staff’s writing skills at the graduate level.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Erneo Bernardo Ochi, stressed the significance of the seminar, noting that it is a groundbreaking initiative at the University and is crucial in equipping academic staff with the knowledge required to effectively guide and mentor students.
“Our first goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to supervise graduate diploma, master’s or doctoral students so that you can identify and fill the gaps that exist,” Professor Ochi told the participants. “To become an associate professor, you must have at least published some books, some research results, and at least 15 to 20 articles.”
The Vice-Chancellor also pointed out that writing a research paper requires precise skills from title selection to citations. He encouraged the trainees to fully participate in the training and commit to acquiring mentoring skills.
Professor Ochi stressed: “Writing a research paper involves several steps, including choosing a research title, outlining objectives, methods, introduction, discussion, acknowledgments, and references. This workshop is designed to help you develop these skills.”
