The extreme rainfall on Tuesday night caused a lot of misery in several parts of Breda. Streets were flooded and several cars collided with manhole covers, which floated away due to high water levels.
The latter happened on the Königenberg. One of the cars collided with a manhole cover and then hit a lamp post, and another car’s airbags were fully deployed. The third car had a flat tire due to the accident.
Although the car was badly damaged, the driver was not seriously injured. An ambulance will be on scene to check on the driver. City staff have now restored the well to its original location.
Flooded cellar
A little further away, several streets in and around Prinsenhagen were flooded. The road under the Meester Bierensweg railway viaduct was also impassable. A driver who tried to do so was trapped and had to be rescued by the fire brigade.
The heavy rainfall also had a considerable impact on the residents of the apartment building on Maarten de Vriesstraat. The building’s cellar filled with water. The fire brigade is looking for a solution.
The safety zone also urged people to call 112 only in emergencies. “We have received many reports of flooding. Call 112 only in emergencies and if it is unsafe. Do not enter flooded streets unless it is necessary to help someone and it is safe to do so.”
