Police are investigating a case of infanticide where on August 10, 2024, the body of a baby girl was found dead at the Landi garbage dump.
According to initial reports, the baby was initially found in a community collection bin in the East Honiara dump area.
The baby was reportedly found wrapped in clothes and wrapped in a plastic bag inside an empty box during a check of rubbish dumped by a Honiara City Council rubbish truck.
Juanita Matanga, deputy national operations commissioner, said police had seen a recent increase in infanticides, which was believed to be linked to teenage pregnancy and social changes.
“We must support each other and work together to prevent baby abandonment.”
“This report highlights the ongoing incidents of infant abandonment.”
“The act of aborting and abandoning a baby is not only a criminal act, it is also an inhumane act.”
“This inhumane behavior needs to be taken seriously and action needs to be taken to stop it from happening,” Matanga said.
The police call on relevant departments, communities and parents to work together to assist young women in difficult situations to seek help and support to prevent such inhumane acts from happening.
“Let us remain vigilant and provide children with the support and protection they need to thrive. It is our responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment for every child,” Matanga said.
She added that it is the primary responsibility of parents to take good care of our children, especially our daughters, to prevent such tragedies from happening.
Securing their well-being is essential to ensuring their safety and future.
