The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Affairs (AWJ) launched the “Holiday Employment” program through a work ethics meeting on Thursday, August 29. The program means that a group of school-age teenagers from different regions will be given 10-day holiday job opportunities provided by the ministry.
The holiday work starts on Monday, September 2. Before starting work, they will receive professional ethics education in a two-day course that teaches the values, norms and behaviors expected in a professional work environment.
This is crucial as many holiday workers have little to no work experience and this may be their first time in the workplace. The programme is managed by the Youth Centre branch of Suriname.
The theme of this session was “I follow the 5Ps in my AWJ holiday work”, which are the concepts of participation, presence, performance, performance and problems. In the context of holiday work, these concepts are closely intertwined and play an important role in the success of holiday work and the learning experience of young people.
Understanding these relationships can help holidaymakers navigate their work holidays, enabling them to not only be successful in temporary employment, but also gain valuable work experience and prepare for future career challenges. The sessions will also be held in the regions of Para, Marowijne, Koroni, Nickerie and Paramaribo.
During the meeting, the young people showed their enthusiasm for the start of the holidays. In total, one thousand young people will work, mostly from home. The trainers are: Meryl Maes (Deputy Director of the Youth Centre), Maverick Kromosoeto, Carol Wilnis and Franklin Boldewijn.
