Nicola Samuel, the Western Bahr el Ghazal state information minister, said authorities in Wau town were working to rescue shops in the main Jou market on Saturday night after a power failure.

Minister Samuel said in an interview with Radio Tamazui on Sunday that the fire broke out at 11pm while it was raining.

He said thanks to the joint efforts of Wau electricity supply company Trinity Energy Limited, the mayor, the police commissioner, the state chamber of commerce and state security forces that were recently deployed to the market, they were able to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops.

Samuel noted that the failure was caused by heavy rainwater leakage from the roof.

“The fire broke out due to an electrical fault. There was a problem with the electrical wiring at a shop in Jau market and we received a call late at night,” said Samuel.

“I was notified at 11pm and I want to thank the national security team of the market, the police chief, the mayor and his deputies and the chamber of commerce. I want to thank them because we contacted the fire department but to no avail,” he said.

Samuel said a damage assessment will be conducted Sunday morning.

The minister urged market traders to avoid illegal electricity connections and instead contact the power company to provide them with qualified electricians.

Samuel said the rain also caused a brief outage in the Zain Telecom network, which serves the greater Bahr el Ghazal area, including Abyei, but engineers had restored network communications last night.

“The rains also affected the main network switch of Zain, one of the operators in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, which includes Abyei, but with the help of engineers and security teams we worked until 1am to restore the network,” he said.
