Sydney, Australia) – The Australian Olympic Committee has excluded its hockey star Tom Craig from the 2024 Paris Olympics after he was arrested buying cocaine in the French capital.
Kookaburras players from the Australian men’s national hockey team have lost all their privileges as athletes and have been banned from parading at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, a statement from the Australian committee said.
“I cannot endorse what Tom did. He is a good man who made the wrong decision. But decisions like this have consequences,” Anna Meares, chef de mission for the Australian Olympic team, said in a statement issued in the French capital on Wednesday evening.
Craig, 28, was arrested while buying cocaine in Paris on Tuesday night and was held for several hours at the city’s police station, but no charges were brought against him and he was not fined for the crime.
The next day, Craig was released after being reprimanded by a French judge and issued a brief statement to the media in Paris apologizing for “embarrassing everyone.”
“I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions. My actions were my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, teammates, friends, the sport and the Australian Olympic team,” the player lamented, according to Australia’s public broadcaster ABC.
Mills noted that Craig “has apologized, he’s shown remorse, he’s acknowledged his mistakes, and if he needs help, we’ll support him.”
Craig’s Australian hockey team won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but were eliminated on Sunday after losing 2-0 to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. JS
