Several flights were forced to circle east of Auckland before leaving the airport.

An Auckland Airport spokesman said an international flight about to depart reported a problem just after 7.30pm when it took off.

They said: “The aircraft left the runway a short time later and returned safely to the gate.”

“The safety of our passengers is always Auckland Airport’s top priority and we quickly carried out a routine inspection of the airport which meant the runway needed to be closed for a short period of time.

“After discovering debris on the runway, we sent two sweepers to clear it. Unfortunately, the brief closure of the runway caused a number of flights to be delayed and some arriving flights had to be diverted.”

The runway has now reopened.
