July 25, 2024 (Addis Ababa) – The African Union (AU) and a key Sudanese civil alliance on Thursday failed to agree on the agenda for the second meeting to prepare for the intra-Sudanese political dialogue, sources said.
The AU held a consultative meeting with the Coordination of Democratic Civil Forces (Tagadum) in Addis Ababa, but the two sides failed to reach a consensus on the format and participants of the second preparatory meeting.
Taghadoom boycotted the first preparatory meeting in early July, citing concerns that ousted President Omar al-Bashir’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) might be involved.
Sources close to the discussions told Sudan Tribune that the Taqaddum group still has reservations and may continue its boycott if the AU does not address its concerns.
The second meeting has not yet been scheduled but is expected to take place in the coming weeks, said Ambassador Noureddine Satti, coordinator of the preparatory process, who confirmed that participants in the first meeting had no objection to Taghadoom’s participation.
However, Sudan Tribune has learnt that members of the AU high-level panel held an informal meeting with NCP leaders in Addis Ababa last week to discuss the possibility of the party’s participation in the dialogue process.
Participants in the first preparatory conference formally agreed to exclude the NCP from the post-war political process.
